NCPD Expands to Serve More People with Disabilities
January 15, 2010
San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago — The National Centre for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) recently completed a $1.25 million expansion project to house its agricultural, horticultural and orthopedic units.
The culmination of five years of work, the project was possible due to the cooperation of many organizations, including the Republic Bank of Trinidad and Tobago, the United Way of Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean Development Bank. The Republic Bank contributed nearly $500,000 to the expansion, and has committed $4.7 million over the next five years to help persons with disabilities.
Trinidad and Tobago President and NCPD Patron George Maxwell Richards and San Fernando Mayor Ken Ferguson were in attendance at the opening ceremony. NCPD CEO Beverly Beckles celebrated the opening, but added that there is more work left to be done: “Inclusion into the mainstream society, through access to rehabilitation and training, and ultimately finding decent work, remains an unfulfilled aspiration for many youths and adults with disabilities.”
The new building will allow NCPD to continue to expand services provided and better serve the community.
